Been having some of these days myself. I have a theory (based on experience and intuition) that to make substantive long-term progress, the individual has to be tested along the way with failures. They can be small or large. They can be the individual’s fault or not. They tend to group together, meaning there will be multiple failure events in a short period of time. Refusing to quit despite things going wrong and figuring out how to succeed overall despite the problems is part of the process. The universe tests us all. Those who can answer the call despite the difficulties succeed. Those who can’t, don’t.

So what’s the deal with trigger warnings? Do they actually help? They clear are a culture war fixture. But where do they come from and is there any scientific evidence behind them? Because they first got public attention at liberal arts universities in the US I assumed that it was the popularization of academic research. That’s not actually what happened. It was students who pressured schools to adopt them. Where did the students learn about trigger warnings? Early social media! LiveJournal, Tumblr, and most especially fanfic sites had trigger and content warnings on their content and lots of students had used those sites in high school and liked the idea of trigger warnings. Completely different. Really cool to see a quickly working demo but it's using a cut down version of the Signal protocol which I abandoned early on because it makes private group conversations extremely hard / if not impossible.

Governing yourself and respecting the other most closely paints a tribe in my mind. Tribes were full of conflict and violence. As technology progressed, no tribe could match the power of organized armies unless they banded together. Even in a tribe you’re usually governed by some agreed upon code of conduct - usually tribe elders and tribe to tribe agreements. We’re always delegating away protection because being responsible for your own just doesn’t work.
