ive been stripping bark from alder trees for a project. the sap turns a dark orange-ish magenta-ish red when exposed to air and sunlight. it stains skin and clothes. so i put a bunch of bark strips into a big stock pot full of water, and boiled them for a while. the water is dark maroon. putting a towel in it overnight to see how well it works as a dye. i might boil it down to a concentrated form and see how it works as a wood stain. 🙂🤷
