:opinion: Theory: My theory is that the Trump administration invested an initial amount in wBTC (Wrapped Bitcoin) rather than directly in BTC or BTC ETFs to create the beginnings of a strategic bitcoin reserve by proxy. This choice allowed them to benefit from DeFi features like yield generation and advanced smart contract functionality, all while the actual Bitcoin remained under custodial oversight. It could also serve as a test run for directly holding real BTC, given that wBTC can eventually be redeemed 1:1 for Bitcoin once secure on-chain smart contracts become more sophisticated. In the meantime, the relationship with the custodians would function almost like self-custody, due to the strong regulatory authority the government could exert. However, direct BTC ownership is generally superior because it avoids the centralization risks that come with a custodial framework. Holding wBTC means depending on a third party to manage the underlying Bitcoin. I want to emphasize that this scenario is purely speculative; there is no official confirmation or publicly verifiable data to substantiate these claims.
