It is part of the larger Falkenstein fortification complex composed of the main fortress of Oberfalkenstein, that is a ruin today, and the lower barbican of Niederfalkenstein, that is largely preserved. It changed various owners over the centuries, ftom the Counts of Gorizia to the Habsburgs, for example. In the 20th century, it was rebuilt and restored. Now it is a private property and can be visited in summer.
